Do Good Be Good

Do Good - Be Good is a motto my mother always taught us.  She loves to say "Service is never convenient".  I adapted my Young Women lesson on service from Lesson 30 and added in some delights from For the Strength of Youth and Preach my Gospel.  Then I had one of my darling Laurel's (I always claim the girls as mine - even though I am the Beehive Leader!!)  Talk about a recent 2 week service project she did in Belize with her school.  (Jealous!!)  I am grateful to Mom for teaching me to always try to Do Good and to Be Good.

Discussion Questions

• How can we learn to be more thoughtful of the feelings and needs of others?
• What are some ways we can serve our families, friends, and communities?
• How does service bless both the giver and the receiver?
• How might the intentions of our hearts affect how we serve?

For the Strength of Youth: “When ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God.”  -Mosiah 2:17

Service to others is an important characteristic of a disciple of Jesus Christ. A disciple is willing to bear other people’s burdens and to comfort those who need comfort. Often Heavenly Father will meet the needs of others through you.

There are many ways to serve others. Some of the most important service you can give will be within your own home. You can also serve in your Church assignments, school, and community. You can serve by doing temple and family history work. You can serve by sharing the gospel with others now and as a full-time missionary in the future. Often the most meaningful service is expressed through simple, everyday acts of kindness. Seek the guidance of the Holy Ghost each day to know whom to serve and how to help meet their needs. Follow the example of the Savior as you serve others.

As you devote yourself to serving others, you will draw closer to Heavenly Father. Your heart will be filled with love. You will learn that service and sacrifice are ways to overcome selfishness. You will enjoy happiness that comes only from giving service to God and others. Your capacities will increase, and you will be an instrument in God’s hands to bless the lives of His children.

D&C 64:33 states: “Wherefore, be not weary in well-doing, for ye are laying the foundation of a great work. And out of small things proceedeth that which is great.”

Preach my gospel states: During His mortal ministry, the Savior “took upon him the form of a servant” (Philippians 2:7). He went about “doing good” (Acts 10:38) and “preaching the gospel” (Matthew 4:23). As you follow this example, you will become an instrument in His hands. 

Many of us have had experience with service that is planned service.  Such as church or family “service projects,” or helping someone move, serving at a Church farm, or cleaning a yard.  There are also types of service that are unplanned opportunities. My mother used to tell me that “service is never convenient.”  This type of service involves listening to the Spirit to recognize opportunities for small, simple acts of kindness that you can offer to God’s children. Pray and be aware of opportunities throughout each day to do good. As you seek to do good, you will be led to people who are in need of God’s service and love. 

President Hinckley said:  “Do you want to be happy? Forget yourself and get lost in this great cause. Lend your efforts to helping people. . . . Stand higher, lift those with feeble knees, hold up the arms of those that hang down. Live the gospel of Jesus Christ.”

Testimony:  Grateful for Gospel of Jesus Christ.  Grateful to serve others – be a tool of our Heavenly Faither.  Challenge everyone to do good and be good. My Baby Boy Graduates!!

It was just yesterday that we were calling this sweet little boy "Good as Gold"!!  That lasted until he was a toddler and Grandma G asked if it was "Fool's Gold".  Cole has been a joy to raise, it happened so fast and now he is graduation from High School.

I hosted a party for Coleman's friends and their Mom's on the morning of Graduation.  These are a great group of boys, very creative, funny, smart kids.  It has been fun to see them all grow up.

 And Sam Curtis of coarse, the token girl!  She has been "one of the guys" for all the years these kids have hung out together.  Love you Sam!!

Summer fun in sunny CA

We had fun visiting our California cousins.  They have a beautiful house on Equestrian property in Poway.  Leena loved seeing the chickens, horses, dogs, hedgehog, snakes (pet snake luckily!), turtle and probably a few other things I'm forgetting. 

Visiting the tide pools - the only problem was that the tide was high and crashing into the shore, so we couldn't see anything!

So we made freinds with a seal.

I'm embarassing myseld with this picture: I honestly thought I looked just like Liza from behind!!  What's up with that?  Note to self: never let husband be in charge of camera at beach.

Another friend.  He loved eating all our Cheetoes!

The kids made up a game at the beach which involved breaking rules, and arguing the call.  It was a game designed to end with disaster, tears, and maybe a few paddleball bruises.  I sat there and tried so hard not to interfere, while the families around us were laughing their heads off.  It was fun to watch them!!

I LOVE beach pictures.  There is just something about the sand and the sea.

We ended the trip by going to Knott's Berry Farm.  We didn't take any picutres because all of the rollercoaster's are crazy scary upside down headache creating monsters!!
